School of Education

Project Name: School of Education
Location: Wilmington, NC
Client: UNC-Wilmington
Project Type: Institutional
Project Details: 82,000 sf
Cost: $14,000,000

The primary design challenge was in the scaling down of a very large educational building so that it is more in keeping with the scale of the Georgian campus architectural vernacular. Similarly we took on the challenge to make this a uniquely memorable, inspiring, and inviting building for the campus. By breaking down the building plan into four squares and splitting those with a 3 story atrium, the “in-between” spaces create the opportunity for gathering and interaction between students and faculty. The central atrium arcade draws architectural cues from early 20th century retail arcades and train stations in Europe. This arcade houses the exhibit for the N.C. Teacher’s Hall of Fame.
